"Oh Baby Baby" killed MTV forever. Amen

how is life going today friends? I have little time so am going to do the cheap and easy thing that writers do and "list" random items for your enjoyment. here goes:

1. Music- Please do yourself a big favor and buy albums from the following bands: Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses, Of Monsters and Men, Iron and Wine, Bon Iver, The National, Mumford and Sons, Lana Del Ray (yes her) and most importantly to me, The Lumineers.  and I'll get back to you on more. Most of these bands have been around for a while, but like The Killers and The White Stripes bring music to a whole new level of NOW. These musicians and others are bringing us further away from the craptastic last decade which had life but was close to being eeked out by late 90's pop rock and horrible hip hop ( i mean the bad hip hop not the good stuff).

I am talking a full arc from when Britney Spears came onto the MTV scene, promptly smashing any good corner it had on bringing us "unique" artists, and stomped good music under her little plaid skirts with a wink and a lick of the glossy lips. That moment of "Oh baby baby" was like a death knell to alternative music via MTV, and from there we had to revive our creative ways to find the best new stuff- via zines (like i did in the late 80's circa Details, Interview, RS etc) and of course using the interwebs. This doesn't mean we can all enjoy Zac Brown Band, Jimmy Buffet and the laid back discourse of fun loving mellow Jack Johnson, and also appreciate their talents and lyricism. BUT do yourself a favor and get the new fresh sounds of music that sounds modern, it SOUNDS like 2012, not like 2001.

2. Sandusky- Jerry Sandusky and his wife can burn in hell.

3.  I am signing up for a half marathon. God bless my little black heart. I'll let you know how it turns out, and have about one more week to enjoy some cheap wine before my quit date and training begin. Like I said, bless my poor heart and keep the ambulance close by.

4. Oklahoma Thunder were fun to watch but wow what a struggle. A team to watch next year and good for them for going to the end, the underdog while most people suddenly became Heat fans- funny how that happens as a clear winner becomes predictable. Fairweather fans - sports apparels best friends.

5.  Beware of snarky vegetarians.- as you know, i have cut meat out of our grocery lists and cook 95% of our family meals meat free. I enjoy posting new menus, news bits and we have fun at our local co-op trying new items to cook. However, I have been in close contact during my life with what i term the elitist food cop- the vegetarian who notices how you eat, how much you recycle, what you feed your kids, what you wear (is it fair trade, retreaded, reused, redone, regrown, rebirthed??) and this cycle is easy to get into. As someone who reads vegetarian, organic and dyi type news items, it is indeed an easy slope into a lifestyle that although moralistically Earth and human- body friendly, can also drive people to become arrogant, full of hubris, and just plain snotty and not fun to be around. So, if you're diving further into the world of eco friendly living as we have, keep your smile on, remember you are indeed an island, and you are not here to look down on others for their choices. Worry about you, dear tree lover. Not the rib lover next door..mmmm ribs... Bring them some pot brownies and make friends with people different that yourselves.

6.  We are trying stand up paddle boarding next week. Should be funny and fun.Very popular here. I think it will bore me but we'll see. I like moving through the water (swimming) not standing on top of it. But will be cool to see what's in the water out there.

7. have fun this week. We try to hard to grow up in our 20's and then when in our 30's start talking like we're getting  too old to do things. This is rubbish. I cringe when I hear people joke about how old they are. try new things, join clubs, try hobbies out of your comfort zone. I have recently joined several clubs that are unique to my likes. when we are all 70 -ish we can talk about how it feels to be older. I have found that surrounding ourselves with people who are super social, are involved or just have similar 'likes' (fishing, camping, arts, archeology, beach, live performances, etc) boost motivation to stay active in the city. We've had a very full social calendar this year, mostly due to being around people who like to "get out and do" not sit and dwell. Having fun keeps us all young!

be well.
